Shadowbox

Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab

I led the design and development of a custom commemorative shadowbox created as a retirement gift for a departing Lab director. Working from a list of required artifacts, I developed the concept, materials, color palette, spatial layout, schematics, and 3D mockups for leadership review before taking the design through fabrication.

The project involved collaboration with carpenters, internal fabricators, the displays team, and outside vendors to create custom mounting solutions, including magnetic coin pockets and a removable mount for a historically significant VT fuze. I also incorporated previously designed achievement posters and a transparent acrylic statement panel into the lower section of the display.

The result was a cohesive, functional display that brought together the Lab's history, achievements, and a personal tribute to its departing director.
